Autumn's first MTB trip
On Friday we had the pleasure to do a nice trip with our friends Johan and Tatiana, to experienced and inspired cyclists. Our plan was to find a new trail from the north side of the valley, down to Dale, a few kilometers west of Rjukan center. We took Krossobanen up and followed the top of the valley towards east, down to Steinarstaul. From the ATV-road down to Steinarstaul we had a few hundred meters of real nice, technical trail. Unfortunately we didn't find the trail that was supposed to take us further down the hill (many trails in this area are partly covered with vegetation, and finding them can be a challenge).
Even after spending an hour scouting the area for the trail without finding it, we had a fantastic trip in the mountains this afternoon. Perfect weather, nice conditions and pleasant company turned this to a memorable trip.

Rappel with DNT
Yesterday we did a rappel from Vemork bridge, for a group from the Norwegian Tourist Federation (DNT). Throughout the years we have done many trips for DNT, summer and winter, and it is always tons of fun.

Another trip with the Army
Yesterday we did another mountain bike trail run with participants from Rena. Weather was perfect and even after the first climb above Gvepseborg, everyone was highly motivated. On this trip was a mix of people, from experienced off-road cyclists to those who got their first taste of trail riding. The trail from Hukebu offers terrain for everyone, a few technical sections in combination with more or less perfect single track trail.

Last technical section down into Håkadalen

MTB X-trail with the Army
Yesterday we had a group from the Norwegian Army on our MTB X-trail trip. During a couple of days we will be guiding 23 participants from the Rena camp and yesterday we did the first trip from Hukebu down into Håkadalen. Despite some wet conditions from the rain last week, the trail was in pretty good shape. None of the guys (and girl) had done any off-road cycling before, but they mastered even the more technical sections real well.
We are looking forward to the next trip tomorrow!

A morning in the sky
This summer has offered few good days for paragliding. Valleys like Vestfjorddalen can be challenging for flying, often with difficult vind conditions. Last Sunday, conditions were optimal, so we closed the office and took the morning off to go flying.
Rjukan has a few good take-offs for paraglider and hangglider. The most well known are Skipsfjell (Gaustablikk) where you can launch in wind from north and west, and Landsethovda, where you can take off in pretty much any direction, except north. Landsethovda requires a short hike from Gvepseborg. Last Sunday offered perfect conditions for take off from Skipsfjell, with weak wind from north west.
If you launch from Skipsfjell early in the day, chances for finding good thermals are often slim. We have had our best flights late in the afternoon, when we have caught strong Magic Air, a phenomenon caused by cold air sinking from the hills while the warm air in the valley is rising. If you time your take off perfectly, about one hour before sunset, you can have a fantastic flight, with strong thermals all over the valley. Enjoy the evening sun by cruising along the north face of Gaustatoppen.
After a nice flight in perfect conditions we landed on Miland, packed our gliders and a few hours later we were riding our bikes into Håkadalen. It is days like these we live for, when nature defines the rules for the game, and we enjoy the contrasts!
